Description: Performs waived, moderate, and high complexity testing according to guidelines. Interprets and reports results for established tests and examinations in various fields within the clinical laboratory. Comprehends the theories and concepts for each procedure. Utilizes independent thinking and communication skills to confer these concepts to physicians and other members of the staff. Performs quality control, quality assurance, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Provides oversight of clinical processes for Laboratory Technicians and Laboratory Aides. Duties may also include clerical tasks and related laboratory services. Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing. Tests analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results are essential. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. Either corrects the problems or immediately notifies the coordinator. Assumes charge when assigned. Participates in the Laboratory Quality program. Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples. Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies. Documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed. Investigates and troubleshoots issues. Follows established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within established levels of performance. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications. Performs tasks at an acceptable pace to ensure the prompt reporting of accurate patient results. Communicates the status of pending work to the oncoming shift. Communicates critical lab values and other pertinent information to physicians and nursing staff according to policy. Assists with concern resolution and service recovery for staff. Assists with the training of new associates and students. Provides advanced training and theory when applicable. Completes annual competency validations and mandatory safety programs. Monitors and receives supplies into the department according to established procedures. Stores supplies appropriately. Notifies supervisor when supplies appear to be low. Follows safety and infection control policies, including the use of appropriate PPE and safety practices.
