Location: Indianapolis, IN 46250
Position Type: Contract - 03 Months
Contract End Dates: November 23, 2026
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 10:30 AM - 7:00 PM EST
Hours: 40 hours/week
Job Summary
  • The Lab Assistant performs routine laboratory functions accurately and efficiently to support laboratory professionals and facilitate daily laboratory operations. This position is responsible for specimen handling, preparation, processing, data recording, equipment maintenance, quality control, and general laboratory support while following all safety and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sort, receive, and process laboratory specimens within the department.
  • Perform routine maintenance on designated laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Centrifuge specimens and prepare samples for testing.
  • Print additional specimen labels and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Record laboratory data, including temperature charts and specimen storage information.
  • Perform specimen storage and retrieval activities.
  • Prepare reagents and/or media as required.
  • Prepare specimens at designated workstations for testing, including:
    • Building worklists
    • Aliquoting specimens into sample cups
    • Checking specimens for clots and fibrin
    • Inoculation
    • Slide preparation
  • Perform assigned QA/QC activities.
  • Resolve pending specimen lists and investigate outstanding items.
  • Locate and identify missing specimens.
  • Decontaminate laboratory work areas and maintain a clean, safe environment.
  • Perform weekly radioactive wipe tests as required.
  • Maintain department files, records, and documentation.
  • Change gas cylinders according to established procedures.
  • Follow all PPE, laboratory safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Use the laboratory information system and operate computers/PCs effectively.
  • Properly dispose of biohazardous materials.
  • Complete required training and competency checklists.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous working relationship with coworkers and internal/external customers.
  • Prioritize multiple tasks to maximize workstation efficiency.
  • Perform other laboratory support duties as assigned.

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Medical Assistant training is helpful.
  • Coursework in math and science is preferred.

Experience
  • No prior laboratory experience required.
  • Previous laboratory, medical, healthcare, specimen processing, or medical assistant experience is a plus.

  • Color vision test required.
  • Copy of high school diploma or equivalent required.
